Special Classes

Fitness: This weekly, 45-minute class is designed just for preschoolers and is led by experienced preschool fitness specialists at Stretch n’ Grow. Children learn about their muscle groups and bones, they run, slide, stretch, bend, twist to music and have loads of fun! They also learn about choosing healthy foods to keep their bodies strong.

Hindi: A temple volunteer visits every week to share her knowledge of Hindi, the national language of India. Our children learn Hindi vocabulary, basic phrases and bhajans.

Aarti: Every Wednesday morning the children go up the main prayer hall in the new temple and visit the priests for Aarti. The priests love to share stories about the Gods and send the children away with messages about being good to their teachers, families and all people on earth. The children sing along during Aarti and everyone gets a chance to participate in the ceremony.

Yoga: Every week our children have a peaceful yoga session with an experienced yoga instructor from the temple. They each use their own rug and work at their own level as they strive to improve their balance, flexibility, strength and knowledge of yoga positions. It is a time for reflection and a time for them to develop curiosity about this ancient practice.

Library: Our students love greeting the Auburn Hills librarian who visits twice monthly. She brings oversized books, themed books, puppets, felt board stories, new fingerplays and more to share with our students. The Bharatiya Temple is renovating their library with a dedicated space for Gurukul students. It is expected to be completed by March 2014. Gurukul students will be happy to have two different library experiences.

Sign Language:Our very own Program Director meets with the children every Monday to teach them basic sign language concepts. The children enjoy songs, words, letters and counting in sign language. Every one that participates enjoys sign language decoding activities as well as sign language coloring worksheets that go home weekly!

Special Classes are optional: Students whose families do not wish them to attend may stay in the classroom with a teacher.
